- Mahatma Gandhi started the Non-Cooperation campaign on September 4, 1920, with the goal of self-governance and full independence.
- After the Rowlatt Act of 21 March 1919 and the JallianwalaBagh on 13 April 1919, the Indians National Congress withdrew its support for British reforms.

- The Indian National Congress in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in September committed to non-cooperation and began in December 1920.
