Because notheren plains have the most firtile alluvial soil which is good for growing crops,plains what ideal temperature and weather conditions in which it could grow and also has several number of rivers flowing through it which serves both city and villages irrigation and other household needs :)

A great share of the food crops that feed the vast indian population is grown in this plain. Diverse crops like wheat, maize, paddy, sugarcane, cotton and pulses are cultivated here in large scale. It is a densely populated region. Favourable elements like vast extent of land, fertile soil, availability of water, plentiful supply of electricity, availability of labourers etc., helped this plain to get the title 'The backbone of Indian economy'.
