the excessive growth of plants was caused due to the excessive use of fertilizers .

when the soil got washed away it also contained the fertilizers absorbed in it and so as fertilizers have chemicals in it when it enters the water body it polluted the rivers as well as cause any harm to the aquatic plants and animals
