When a object vibrates it sets the  particles of the medium around it in vibration. The particles do not travel through the medium. A particle of the medium in contact with the vibrating object is first displaced from its equilibrium position. Then it exerts force on the adjacent particle. As a result, adjacent particle gets displaced. After displacing the second particle the first particle comes back to its original position. This process is continued in the medium till the sound reaches our ear.The source of sound creates a disturbance in the medium which travels through the medium.Due to this propagation of sound in a medium ,sound is considered as a wave.
