Mars has two polar ice caps.

It is dark during the winters.

The frozen carbon dioxide turns into gas when it is exposed to the sun.

Both the caps are actually frozen water.

The outer layer is of frozen carbon dioxide which is one metre think on the north pole and eight metres thick on the south pole.

The poles have deposits on them which is known as polar-layered deposits.
