Saprophytic nutrition also known as lysotrophic nutrition is the process of digestion of dead or decayed organic material. This process is also known as chemoheterotrophic extracellular digestion. It mostly occurs in fungi
Saprophytic  feeding in other words involves osmotically obtaining food from dissolved (decayed) matter.

Symbiotic nutrition is a unique type of nutrition between two organisms. It is beneficial for both organisms because they share nutrients. The two organisms derive nutrients from each other without inflicting any harm to each other. e.g fungus and algae.

Differences between saprotrophic nutrition and symbiotic relationship:

  • Saprotrophic and symbiotic both are kind of parasitic organisms which live off of other organisms.
  • There is a fine line of difference between these two organisms based on the way of the nutritional benefit that is taken from different organisms.
  • The symbiotic organisms are the ones which take their nutrition from other organisms but those organisms must be living and must be taking in nutrition themselves while the saprotrophic organisms are the ones that take nutrition from other organisms that have started decaying or are no further in taking any kind of nutrition.
