There are two types of thermometer laboratory thermometer and clinical thermometer. Both the thermometers are made up of mercury, as the heat is provided to the bulb of thermometer the mercury expands and shows the temperature through scales marked on the thermometer.

Laboratory thermometer cannot be used to measure body temperature because of the differences in the range of meausring temperature. Normal human body temperature is 37°C while the temperature range of laboratory thermometer is from –10°C to 110°C (high) while clinical thermometer ranges from 35°C to 42°C. So, if the bulb of  laboratory thermometer take out from the mouth, the mercury level starts falling.
