Q.4 Give reason why?
i) Why nichrome coil are used as heating coils? ii) Why copper is not used for heating
coil?
Answers
Answer:
#1 Nichrome, a non-magnetic 80/20 alloy of nickel and chromium, is the most common resistance wire for heating purposes because it has a high resistivity and resistance to oxidation at high temperatures. When used as a heating element, it is usually wound into coils.
#2 Copper has little resistance, so it does not glow. Secondly its melting point is low.
Answer:
(I)Nichrome is used for making heating element of electrical appliances. Because nichrome does not oxidize and burn easily at high temperature i.e.it has higher melting and boiling point than metals. Thus it does not melt even when a large amount of heat is produced due to passage of current.
(ii).Copper has little resistance, so it does not glow. Secondly its melting point is low.
