Water is amphoteric in nature ( due to auto- protolysis behavior ) . It acts as an acid as well as bases. With acids stronger than itself, it behaves as base and with base stronger than itself, it acts as acid.
example :
H2O(l) +NH₃(aq)--->NH₄⁺(aq) + OH⁻ (aq) [reaction with base(NH₃)]
H₂O(l) + H₂S(aq)--->H₃O⁺(aq) + HS⁻(aq) [reaction with acid(H₂S)]
example :
H2O(l) +NH₃(aq)--->NH₄⁺(aq) + OH⁻ (aq) [reaction with base(NH₃)]
H₂O(l) + H₂S(aq)--->H₃O⁺(aq) + HS⁻(aq) [reaction with acid(H₂S)]
