Electrolysis of water :- it is the best method for manufacturing of dihydrogen where electricity is cheap.see the attachment ,
In this cell,iron sheet is used as a cathode while nickel plated iron sheets act as anode.
Two electrodes are separated from each other by an asbestos diahragm which prevent mixing of dihydrogen and dioxygen.
On passing electric current, dihydrogen gas is collected at cathode while dioxygen at anode.
the decomposition of water takes place as follow :
H2O <=> H+ + OH-
at cathode , H+ + e -->H•
H• + H• --> H2
at anode, OH- --> 4OH + 4e-
4OH ----> 2H2O + O2
