The ozone layer of the atmosphere protects life on earth by filtering out some of the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Thinning of this layer therefore poses a threat. In humans, it increases the risk of conditions such as skin cancer, suppression of the immune system and eye cataracts.

Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. Our bodies are made up of about 60% water and we cannot survive more than a few days without it. Water is a precious substance that meets our physical needs while at the same time being of great spiritual importance to many people.

Although seawater is not potable, it has various other kinds of uses which prove its importance: Water from oceans can be used for making hydroelectricity, a form of renewable source of energy. It can be used as a cheap transport method. They can be used for activities like scuba diving, water sports, etc.
