Self respect marriage was first implemented as Hindu marriage Act (Madras Amendment), 1967, introducing section 7A.

The law was passed by Tamil Nadu assembly on 27 Nov 1967 and was approved by president on 17 Jan 1968.

This was officially announced in gazette at 20 Jan 1968.
