They all tend to react with water vapour and carbon dioxide in the air to produce hydrogencarbonates - and these decompose easily on heating, releasing the carbon dioxide again. Therefore heating a normal lab sample of, say, sodium carbonate does often produce some carbon dioxide because of this contamination
