Some trade unions fear that the free movement of people depresses wages of ordinary workers because immigrants from other European countries are willing to work for lower wages. Should the free movement of people thus be restricted for some countries or for certain time periods.

No free movement of people should not be restricted for some countries or for certain time periods.  Freedom of movement is one of the Single Market 's four fundamental freedoms – the others of which are freedom for capital , services, & goods. Freedom of movement started as an opportunity for people after the WWII to migrate to fill jobs. The aim was to encourage the economy of the EU 's six founding members through a mobile workforce and to probably prevent further conflict on the continent.

Explanation:

  • Free-movement agreements enable workers to relocate from nations where jobs are scarce & where there is a shortage of employment. The workers who have suffered most from the Eurozone crisis in southern Europe have, in recent years, been moving north to find employment.
  • In 2004 & 2007 "Eastern Europe's" free movement privileges have been expanded, according to the European Commission, almost 1% higher than in the old Member States' total GDP. However, not every nation enjoys the benefits.  the "International Monetary Fund" states, while settlers in Eastern European nations have contributed to the riches of other EU countries, their migration has stopped growth and slowed up the development of living standards in the country's homes since the collapse of communism.
  • However, the OECD reports that the free movement rate across Europe has dropped by as much as 6%. This would be more and more important as the European workforce declines by an estimated 12% by 2030, resulting in skills and job shortages which are putting pressure on the economic growth of the EU.
