Too much of sugar confectioneries can cause tooth decay. It happens when some element of the food we consumed get stuck to our teeth which later turns into acid when not brushed properly.

Toothpaste is a combination of many useful chemicals. Each chemicals are for different purposes. Fluoride protects and strengthens teeth. Antibacterial agent controls plaque. Desensitizing agents and anti-tarter reduces the discomfort of tooth sensitivity. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) removes plaque from teeth. Enzymes kill bacteria in your mouth. Sweet tooth leads to tooth decay. Which is caused by the action of Bacteria on food particles remaining in the mouth and acid is formed.

The pH of the mouth falls below 5.5 and the tooth enamel dissolves resulting in cavities.

Toothpastes are generally basic, they neutralise the excess acid produced in the mouth and prevent tooth decay.
