Answer:

When two coins are tossed,the sample space is

S=(H,H),(H,T),(T,H),(T,T,)

Let H be the number of tails that occur.the random variable H take values of 0,1,2

H=0 when no tails occur.or 2 heads occur

P(H=0)=1/4

H=1 when only one tail occurs, when (H,T) or (T,H) occurs

P(H=1)=1/2

H=2, when only two tails occur.when (T,T) occurs

P(H=2)=1/4

Given : Two coins are tossed.

Let H be the number of tails that occur.

To Find:  Determine the values of the random variable H.

Solution:

Two coins are tossed.

Possible outcomes

Head Head        => Number of tails = 0    ,  H = 0

Head Tail        => Number of tails = 1    ,  H = 1

Tail Head        => Number of tails = 1    ,  H = 1

Tail Tail         =>   Number of tails = 2    ,  H = 2

H = 0   probability  = 1/4

H = 1  probability  = 2/4 = 1/2

H = 2  probability = 1/4

Expected value of H  =  0 (1/4) + 1(1/2) + 2(1/4)  = 1
