We use lead pencils for writing and making sketches, But it's interesting that The lead in the pencil is not made of Lead ( Pb) , But actually made from Graphite .
Graphite is a carbon compound . It is made of layers of C - C bonds which have sp² hybridization.
When we write with a pencil, These layers because of less interactive forces get sticked to the paper . These may be erased with a eraser because of weak interaction.
Graphite is a good conductor of electricity.

in our modern world, pencils don't contain any lead but still we call them lead pencils because ancient world used something similar to pencil for writing and sketching and it contained lead. so it's still continued to be called lead pencils..
but now pencils don't have any lead in it. pencils contains graphite (a form of carbon). it's a non-metal but a very good conductor of electricity.
graphite is used as pencil 'lead' because of it's soft property and thus helps to form chemical carbon bonds. the bonds are weaker so it can be erased too.. and graphite is little dark which can be visible easily by everyone.
because of all these things, graphite is the most suitable thing for the pencil "lead"
