epiglottis is a flap like structure
it protects the trachea from entering of food in to it
it opens wide when we breathe air
it slightly closes when we swallow food

A flap like structure present at the opening of trachea which protects food or other foriegn bodies to enter is known as epiglottis. It opens when we breathe and closes when we stop breathing like during chewing food.
