what decides the losing or gaining of the electron?

Valency of the electron determine the gaining and losing of an electron.. if the valency is more than four... The atom will try to gain the electron as gaining 3 electrons is more easier than losing 5 electrons... But if the valency is less than four then the atom will lose elctrons as losing 3 more easier than gaining 5 electrons... In a rare case like carbon.. where the valency is four... the atom can either gain electrons lose all the electrons to become stable
