The cutlery used by Mrs Dorling actually belonged to the narrator's mother. She had been its caretaker during the war when the narrator along with her mother had to flee to save their life. After the war when the narrator went to see Mrs Dorling, she saw her mother's belongings at Mrs Dorling's house. When she saw the cutlery she relived the memory of the day when her mother had once asked her to polish the same cutlery. The sight of the cutlery filled her with emotions.
