▪Elements towards the bottom of the group have intervining d and f orbitals which has less penetrating and shielding power.

▪The valence electrons experiances increased effective nuclear charge because of this.

▪ Hence the pairs of electrons in the inner orbitals of valence shell will not take part in chemical combination. This is called inert pair effect.

▪ As a result, elements towards bottom of periodic table shows stable oxidation state at oxidation number less than 2 of the group oxidation number.
