A settlement is a place where people live. Asettlement could be anything from an isolated farmhouse to a mega city. A settlement can be permanent or temporary.

There are three types of settlements :-

• Compact settlement :- A compact settlement is a closely built area of dwellings, wherever flat land is available in a scattered settlement dwellings and are spaced over an extensive area.

• Semi-compact settlement :- In semi - compact settlement the dwellings or houses are not well-knitted. Such settlements are characterized by a small but compactnuclears around which hamlets are dispersed. It covers more area than the compact settlements.

• Dispersed settlement :- A dispersed settlement, also known as a scattered settlement, is one of the main types of settlement patterns used by landscape historians to classify rural settlements found in England and other parts of the world.
