What happens when we put Hcl (acid)and NAOH (base) on cloth strips which were put in the plastic bag with chopped onions?

We put HCl  on the cloth strips - having the smell of onions...  The smell of onions will be retained still.

We put Na OH   (base), then the smell of onions is washed off. There will not be smell any more.
