Kalinga is the ancient name of coastal Orissa. Asoka fought a war to conquer Kalinga. however he was so horrified when he saw the violence and blood that he decided not to light anymore wars. He is only the king in the history of the world who gave up conquest after winning a war.

Answer:

Ashoka realised the importance of Kalinga and the historic battle of Kalinga took place. Though Kalinga was conquered, the loss on both sides was very heavy. Ashoka was horrified when he saw the violence and bloodshed and decided not to fight wars anymore. Ashoka became a follower of Buddha, and devoted the rest of his life to Dhamma, and thus, Dhammavijaya(victory through dharma/religious duty) became his goal.
