What is a Solenoid? How is it similar to a bar magnet?

A bar magnet is a permanent magnet, a solenoid is an electromagnet, it acts like a magnet only when an electric current is passing through it. The poles of a bar magnet are also fixed where in a solenoid the poles can be altered.
