When substances are cooled they contract and when they are heated they expand.
But when when water is cooled it contracts only till 4°C. On further cooling it expands. This is called anomalous expansion of water.
The word anomalous means "strange".
This anomalous expansion of water is of great help to aquatic life in cold regions
