Electric flux, property of an electric field that may be thought of as the number of electric lines of force (or electric field lines) that intersect a given area. Electric field lines are considered to originate on positive electric charges and to terminate on negative charges.

Electrical flux has SI units of volt meters (V m), or, equivalently, newton meters squared per coulomb (N m2 C−1). Thus, the SI base units of electric flux are kg·m3·s−3·A−1.

If the surface is placed perpendicular to the electric field then maximum electric lines of force will pass through the surface. Consequently maximum electric flux will pass through the surface. If the surface is placed parallel to the electric field then no electric lines of force will pass through the surface.
