What is separate electorate? Why do you think Gandhiji was against the demand of separate electorate by B.R. Ambedkar?

A separate electorate meant certain rights, in which separate electorates were demanded in the society for the Dalits. This demand was made by Dr. BR Ambedkar.

Dr. BR Ambedkar demanded a separate electorate for Dalits in the Round Table Conference in 1930 to organize Dalits into the Depressed Classes Union. He wanted Dalits to have a separate electorate. Gandhiji did not agree with this proposal of his. When the British government agreed with Dr. Ambedkar, Gandhiji started fasting till death.

Gandhiji believed that a separate electorate for Dalits would dilute the chances of their integration into the society and the discrimination of inequality in the society would remain the same. The depressed class will not be able to join the mainstream of society

Later Ambedkar accepted Gandhiji's point of view and by then abandoned the concept of the electoral college. But the system of separate reserved seats for Dalits was fixed in the provincial and central legislative councils. They were decided to be elected by all classes by common vote.
