The basis of Mendeleev's periodic table is atomic mass.

In his periodic law, he proposed that the properties of elements are periodic functions of their atomic masses.

The two guiding factors which led Mendeleev to create his priodic table were:
1. Arranging elements in increasing order of atomic weight (mass).
2. Grouping the elements with their similar properties together.

Mendeleev's periodic table contains 8 groups and 12 columns.
