Atom is one of the smallest particles of the world, which have the number of protons equal to the number of electrons revolving around the nucleus. Ex– Na, Cu, Mg, Ar, etc.
When an atom loses or gains electrons to reach it's nearest inert gas state and the number of protons gets unequal to the number of electrons revolving around the nucleus is known as Ion. Ex– Fe3+, S2-, Na+, etc.
I hope this will help you.
