In springs, water is allowed to circulate to the surface and move freely, giving off steam and heat. In geysers, constrictions keep the boiling water underground.

The big and phenomenal difference between a geyser and a hot spring is considered as that a geyser need not to face any obstruction in its hydro thermal plumbing near the earth surface.
In hot springs, water is allowed to circulate naturally to the surface and to flow and move freely, releasing off steam and heat to the surroundings.
In geysers, constrictions is present that keeps the boiling water to remain underground.
