In the poem, it is imagined that silence is like something solid body which can roll back, and fill space resting behind the traveller has gone away.
The poem sounds as if the audience is captivated by whatever it is.
It may be the sound they are hearing or watching and they are totally fixed the subjects to whom it is presented.
