The outermost structure of an animal cell is the cell membrane.

Currently, the most accepted model for cell membrane is fluid mosaic model proposed by S.J.Singer and G.L .Nicolson (1972). According to this model, the plasma membrane contains a bimolecular lipid layer, both surfaces of which are interrupted by protein molecules.
