Cronin's 'Two Gentlemen Of Verona' uses the title of William Shakespeare's famous play in an ironic manner which is aimed to make the readers rethink as to what it actually means to be a gentleman in the modern world. While Shakespeare's protagonists were gentlemen due to circumstances of their birth, Cronin's gentlemen have earned their title through hardwork, sacrifice, determination and their strong will power.
Through the characters of two young children, Nicola and Jacopo the author brings to light the magnanimity of one's heart and the nobleness of purpose with which any person does various kinds of jobs that actually makes him a gentleman. The story is wrritten in first person and presents a humanist point of view.
With a setting in the city of Verona, the story revolves around the struggles of Nicola and Jacopo after a long period of war. Two Gentlemen of Verona is a story written by 'A.J.Cronin' which depicts the story of two brothers, Nicola and Jacopo. The title of the story is taken from the Shakespeare's play 'Two Gentlemen of Verona'
The story mainly deal with the indomitable courage and fortitude of two young boys. The story shows us that no age bar is important if you are ready to work hard for a cause.

The Story begins when the narrator and his companion is driving through the streets of Verona. There, they met with the two boys, Nicola and Jacopo, selling wild strawberries. The cautious driver, warn the narrator not to buy the wild strawberries. He hoped they could get much better fruits from Verona and the shabby appearance of the two boys discouraged the driver. But, the narrator bought the big basket of wild strawberries from them.
After that, the narrator and his companion, met with the boys so many times, and realized that they was doing so many odd jobs other than selling fruits even at this young age. The narrator was much impressed by the willingness of two boys to work. The two boys proved themselves very useful to the narrator and his companion. They could be relied upon to satisfy thier needs. They could book seats for opera, buy a packet of American ciggaretes and even could suggest a good restaurant.
The Narrator noticed the fact that the two boys do a lot of hardwork but never uses it for thier luxury. They use less money for food and accommodation. The narrator wonder why they were earning money and asked them whether they had some plans. But, Nicola was never ready to disclose thier plans.
When the narrator was gotta leave Verona, he asked the two boys whether he can be of any help. Jacopo requested him to take them to the village quite some distance far away from Verona. The narrator do so and was surprised to see the big red-roofed building.
From there, the narrator get to know the story of the two young boys from the nurse. There, they had thier sister for treatment of tuberculosis of spine. Parents of two boys passed away due to the war and boys joined the group protesting against the war. Thier home and parents were destructed, but, it never destructed thier spirit. They made a shelter by themselves and lived there. But, the sister Lucia was effected by the tuberculosis of spine. Since then, they had been working so hard for thier sister's come back.
Thus, 'The two Gentleman of Verona' shows us that the persons who have the shabbiest of appearance may have a heart which is modest, self-sacrificing and diffident. Besides these facts, the narrator was much impressed by the two boys as they never want anyone to do favour for them.
