Motion guides are used to define the path of an animated object. The path resides on a separate layer and is generally drawn with the Pen tool. You can also use the Line tool or Pencil tool to draw your path.

This type of motion guide works with Classic Tweens only. A second option is to use a Motion Tween. Whenever you add a Motion Tween, a path is automatically created. For more information, see topic, Motion Tween.

Step One

Make sure the timeline/layers panel is open by choosing Window > Timeline.

Step Two

Add a rectangular object to the workspace with the Rectangle tool (r key).

Step Three

Name the layer with the rectangle, Content.

Step Four

Right click the name Content in the Content layer and choose Add Classic Motion Guide from the pull-down menu.

Step Five

Using the Pen tool, draw a shape to define the object’s path on the Guide layer.

Step Six

Click frame 20 of the Guide layer and press F5 to extend the guide to frame 20.

Step Seven

Click frame 20 of the Content layer and press F6 to add a keyframe with the content from frame one.

Step Eight

Click frame one of the Content layer and move the rectangle to one end of the path. By clicking in the center of the rectangle, the center of the rectangle should snap to the path.

Step Nine

Click frame 20 of the Content layer and move the rectangle to other end of the path.

Step Ten

Right mouse-click the area between the keyframes on the Content layer and choose Create Classic Tween from the menu.

Step Eleven

Test your movie (Control > Test Movie) (Cmd/Return (PC-Ctrl/Enter) to view the animation.

Orient to Path

Select the tween on the content layer and choose Orient to Path in the Properties panel to make the object’s rotation match the path.

Scaling over Time

To add perspective, consider scaling the object over time to create the illusion of depth in the scene.
