Prarthana Samaj, or "PrayerSociety" in Sanskrit, was a movement for religious and social reform in Bombay based on earlier reform movements. Prarthana Samaj was founded by Atmaram Pandurang in 1867 when Kesab Chandra sen visited Maharashtra, with an aim to make people believe in one God and worship only one God.

Prarthana Samaj was a social and religious reformation movement which started in Bombay and was founded by Atmaram Pandurang in 1867 promoted the worship.

It promoted the idea of “one god” to remove the promotion of hatred and division on the name of religion.

It didn’t believe in the infallibility of the mighty Vedas and rather than that, it promoted the use of poetic verses of old Marathi poets for prayers.

It promotes the worship of one god only.

Although a majority of its followers were theists, they didn’t blindly believe in the rituals and traditions which were morally wrong.

It was promoted in Southern part of India by Telugu reformer, Viresalingam.
