The story ‘Encounter of a Special Kind’ was written by Tapan Banerjee about his chance encounter with a group of langurs. In the story, the narrator saved a baby langur from an older male langur and a pack of dogs. The male langur had been attacking him viciously, since amongst langurs, there can only be one dominant male. They believe in killing any other male even if it is only a baby. When the narrator tried to distract the older langur and finally forced him to drop the baby, a pack of dogs attempted to try and pounce on him. However, the narrator warded of the dogs and managed to haul the baby to safety.

The impression one gets about the narrator on reading the story is that he displays a maturity far beyond his age. The thought of an animal in distress made him eager to protect it with no thought to his own safety. He can be described as a caring, kind and considerate person who displays a sense of empathy towards all creatures. Despite growing up, he still remembers the encounter with the langurs that occurred fifty five years back and calls it a special encounter.
