The lower members of alcohols are highly soluble in water but the solubility decreases with increase in the molecular weight. The solubility of lower alcohols in water is due to formation of hydrogen bonds(Hydrogen bonding) between alcohols & water molecules.

Hey !!

There is intermolecular hydrogen bonding in alcohol as well as in water. On mixing, the magnitude of attractive forces tends to decrease. Due to decrease in attractive forces, the solution shows positive deviations from ideal behaviour. As a result, the solution will have higher vapour pressure and lower boiling point as compared to that of pure water and pure alcohol separately.

Hope it helps you !!
