The term Mendel used for genes are traits and these traits were later termed as genes. The genes are specific sequences of DNA that code for a particular protein. These genes are termed as the functional units of the DNA.

They are located in the chromatin network or packed inside the chromosomes inside the nucleus of a cell. Only 2% of our entire genomic DNA are the functional genes.
