On seeing the snake drinking water from his trough the poet experiences conflicting emotions. It is because he is caught in between his human instinct and rational thought. Human instinct makes him appreciate the snake and love animals. However, the voice of human education says that snakes are poisonous and are to be killed. Finally, he hurls a log at the snake because he does not want to called a coward. Even though the log does not hit the snake, the poet starts to regret his act, and curses his "accursed human education".
