When she was a child, Helen enjoyed hunting for guinea-fowl eggs and visiting the horse stables, corn-sheds, and the yard where the cows were milked. She relates that she often assisted in milking the cows.

During her childhood years, Helen's teacher, Miss Sullivan, instilled in Helen a love for nature. As a result of Miss Sullivan's teaching, Helen came to enjoy climbing trees and taking walks in the woods. Helen relates that she remained fascinated with nature throughout her school years.Helen had an appreciation of gardens throughout her life. When Helen lived in New York City, she enjoyed daily walks through Central Park.  A companion always walked with her, and finger spelled descriptions of the scenery into her palm.Helen had several opportunities to experience the ocean.  She enjoyed sitting on a rock at the ocean’s edge, feeling the waves crash against it.  She felt the sea spray on her skin.  Helen loved sailing, and she considered it her favorite thing to do.  During a summer spent in Nova Scotia, Helen spent a great deal of time sailing.  She sailed in the Bedford Basin, the Halifax Harbour, and around the Northwest Arm.  Helen also enjoyed canoeing and rowing.
