Mercury is a metal and water is a compound. Metals are good conductors of heat whereas water is composed of two non metals (oxygen and hydrogen). Mercury is the only metal which is in liquid state at room temperature . Also it is more sensitive to temperature(high co-efficient of expansion) as compared to water.
