When food such as crisp are packaged then the empty space in bags is filmed with inert gases such as hydrogen to prevent food spoiling too quickly...
Gas is used to replace oxygen which cause food oxidise, the chemical reaction that spoils the food....

Non reactive gases, or the gases which don't allow the oxidation the packed food is used inside the edible packaging.
Like oxygen free nitrogen.
