Like humans, even plants are prone to damage from the UVA and UVB rays of the sun. The pigment that protects them from these harmful rays is carotenoids.
 In fact the two important roles of carotenoids in plants are: 

Absorption of light energy for the process of photosynthesis 

Protection of chlorophyll (green pigment) from photo damage
