The history of cotton cloth manufacturing in Madurai is very old. During the Sangam period, high quality cotton cloth was manufactured in Madurai. Spinning and weaving were the most important crafts of that period. Madurai was one of the main centers for the manufacturing of cotton fabric. At that time, weavers produced and exported fine cotton cloth.
In the 16th Century, weavers from Saurashtra, Gujarat migrated, for economic reasons, to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and some other states. Some of them settled in Madurai. In Madurai, they came to be known as "Patnulkarans" (Silk Wavers). In order to please the local rulers, the Saurashtrians of Madurai, who were expert craftsmen in fabric weaving, crafted a gift item of cotton fabric suited for use in the tropical conditions, and called it the "Madurai Sungudi".
Indians since beginning had no understanding of really covering or dressing up. They had this need to simply cover themselves up, a dhoti like fabric for men or a long saree like material for female without upper article of clothing and negligible or no attire for kids. The overall population had less of cash to bear the cost of pieces of clothing.
