Why 2nd ionization energy is greater than 1st ionization energy?
Answers
The second ionization energy of Mg is larger than the first because it always takes more energy to remove an electron from a positively charged ion than from a neutral atom. The third ionization energy of magnesium is enormous, however, because the Mg2+ ion has a filled-shell electron configuration.
first understand what is ionization energy..
It is a energy required to remove a electron from a atom in a gaseous state.
if a electron is removed from a neutral atom, got positive charge because any atom contain equal no of electron and proton . if electron removed, proton becomes excess in a atom, that will attract more electron towards nucleus. consequently electrostatic force of attraction between electron and nucleus increased, further removal of electron required more energy.that's why 2nd or successive ionization energy is higher.
I hope it will be clear ..
