By capillarity and transpiration pull. Transpiration pull is the suction created due to loss of water from leaves by transpiration and cohesive forces between water molecules to maintain a continuous column of water in the stem. Capillarity is the property of rising up of water in xylem vessels through narrow diameter due to adhesive attraction of water molecules.
