AGRICULTURE IS the backbone of the Indian economy because 75 per cent of India's population depends on agriculture or agro-industries. Now, it has come to light that India's economic growth is not keeping with the expectations because its agricultural growth is lagging behind.

reasons :

1. Two third population depends on agriculture for their livelihood.

2. It provides food for almost all the citizens irrespective of caste, creed and religion.

3. It provides raw materials for agro- based industries.

4. It produces products for export which brings much of required foreign exchange.

5. Agriculture is an important part of primary sector thus develops a scope for expansion of tertiary sectors in providing information.
