Why did people fight for division of states on linguistic bases in India after freedom?

After gaining independence,people raised different demands and the most crucial one was the division of indian society on linguistic basis.
The leaders feared that it may lead to the disintegration of the society but the result was something different from expected n it united the people.
So the main intention of the people was that they were more comfortable with their mother tongues n they easily communicated with others.
At times the use of English for official purposes was restricted so the reaction of some non-Hindi speaking states took a violent form.Then the govt. agreed to continue the use of English along with Hindi.
Hence the main reason behind fighting for a division on linguistic basis was that as india being a multilingual state,the people were more comfortable with their own languages...
