Why do ordinary citizen not take direct part in electing the president of lndia?

Each citizen of India is represented in Parliament and the state legislative assembly, because, the MPs and MLAsare elected on the basis of universal adult suffrage. The members nominated by the President have noright to vote in this election. ... It canbe held even if some seats in the electoral college are vacant.
